The airline Air Europa suffered a serious computer attack that compromised its customers’ credit card data. The company has taken measures to control the situation and has recommended those affected to cancel their credit cards as a precaution. Despite the airline’s response, this is not their first cybersecurity incident, as they faced a similar attack in 2018.

Air Europa, one of Europe’s main airlines, suffered this Tuesday, October 10, a serious cyber incident that resulted in unauthorized access to its customers’ credit card data.

This computer attack occurred due to a vulnerability in the airline’s systems and is causing concern among those who paid for trips with their credit cards.

This is because several Air Europa users, according to publications The countryreceived emails from the company informing them about the cyberattack and the theft of sensitive financial information.

The compromised data includes credit card numbers, expiration dates, and CVV security codes.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Air Europa assured that it has already controlled the security breach and that no customer has suffered fraud with their credit cards so far.

Credit card data stolen from Air Europa airline

The company stated that the stolen data was limited exclusively to card-related information and did not include personal customer information or access to other Air Europa databases.

However, as a preventive measure, the airline recommended those affected to take certain precautions.

In an email to affected customers, Air Europa advised to contact your bank to cancel the credit card used in transactions with the airline.

In addition, the importance of not sharing personal information, such as PIN or personal data, through phone calls, messages or emails, even if presenting themselves as representatives of the bank, was emphasized.

Customers were urged not to click on links that warn of fraudulent transactions and to contact their bank directly through verifiable means. Those affected were also asked to collect evidence of possible unauthorized use of their cards and report it to the relevant authorities.

The importance of emergency care

Despite Air Europa’s immediate response and containment of the attack, the airline issued apologies to its affected customers and pledged to provide advice and support to those who need it. “The company’s priority is to avoid future security incidents and minimize any inconvenience this may cause to its customers,” the company said in a statement.

For any questions related to this incident, Air Europa has provided a contact email address: [email protected].

This is not the first cybersecurity incident that Air Europa has faced. In 2018, the airline suffered a massive breach of its computer security systems, in which a group of cybercriminals accessed the personal and financial data of almost half a million of its customers.

This attack had a strong impact on the company and resulted in a fine of 600,000 euros imposed by the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) in 2021.
