Airport ‘quiet zone’ declared from October 1

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that one kilometer north and one kilometer south of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport will be declared a ‘quiet zone’.

He said, measures will be taken to stop honking of vehicles in this area from October 1.

The environment adviser said this in the speech of the president in a virtual meeting on Tuesday (September 10). The meeting was organized to stop the use of single use plastic and horn in the airport area.

The environment advisor said that the horn bandh campaign will be carried out in areas adjacent to the airport and in electronic and print media. On September 17, the Civil Aviation Authority will hold a meeting with the concerned departments and agencies to finalize the plan. From October 1, the mobile court will be run by the coordination of Department of Environment, BRTA, Civil Aviation and Traffic Police.

He said, use of alternative materials will be encouraged to make the airport free from single use plastic. This program will be strengthened as per the directives of the Cabinet Division.

In the meeting, Secretary of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Additional Secretary Brind, Chairman, Civil Aviation Authority, Director General of Environment Directorate, Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Public Safety Department, Road Transport and Highways Department, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Armed Police Battalion spoke.
