Adviser on expatriate welfare and foreign employment. Asif Nazrul said, I will arrange a separate special lounge at the airport for those labor brothers and sisters who are going to the Middle East. We have already fixed the place, talked to the civil aviation, hopefully it will be done in two weeks.
He said this at the signing ceremony between the Wage Earners Welfare Board and Parkeso of Malaysia on the protection and welfare of Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia at Pravasi Kalyan Bhawan’s Victory Hall on Saturday (October 5) afternoon.
Dr. Asif Nazrul said, the suffering of expatriate labor brothers and sisters will be reduced a lot in the lounge hall. Apart from this, there will be other VIP facilities as well. From the moment they enter the airport to the moment they board the plane, they have a person on every level of the lounge to assist them. We think this is not generosity towards expatriates. It is our responsibility to them. It should have been done long ago.
Asif Nazrul said, yesterday the Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim came to Bangladesh. The welfare of the workers of Bangladesh was discussed with him. He said that he has announced that 18,000 Bangladeshis will be given the opportunity to go to Malaysia. It does not mean that new workers. I clear it up a bit. This 18 thousand does not mean new jobs, new workers are not being hired. A little over 17,000 workers could not go to the country within the Malaysian government’s deadline despite having all their documents in order. Due to various complications, they could not go to Malaysia. Since they could not leave by May 31, the Malaysian government did not accept them. Unfortunately our labor brothers and sisters paid a lot of money to go to Malaysia. Their pains and sufferings are incomparable. I am the chief advisor. I asked Muhammad Yunus sir to talk to the Prime Minister of Malaysia about this. Yesterday when they came from the airport together in the same car to the Intercontinental Hotel.
He said, before we started the bilateral talks in the hotel, the chief adviser spoke about this. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has promised that these 18,000 Bangladeshis will be given the opportunity to go to Malaysia. Now one thing should be kept in mind, promise means but not sure. We will endeavor as soon as possible to implement this commitment through our High Commission and our Ministry in Malaysia. Tonight there is a meeting with the High Commissioner of Malaysia. There I will discuss the matter, we will create a roadmap.
He also said that I discussed three issues with the Prime Minister of Malaysia in the meeting. Among them, I talked about re-opening Malaysia’s closed labor market. Also, I have requested to open the recruitment process which was limited to 100 recruiting agencies. All recruiting agencies can work and the process is transparent.
Thirdly, I said whether the salary of the workers can be increased or not. It seems to me that it is considered from a human perspective.
The event was also attended by the Secretary of Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment Ministry. Ruhul Amin, Director General of Wage Earners Welfare Board Hamidur Rahman etc.
