A drama unfolds in the game between Ajax Amsterdam and RKC Waalwijk. Shortly before the end of the game, Waalwijk’s goalkeeper Vaessen remains motionless on the ground after an unsuccessful rescue operation. Luckily, club doctors were able to resuscitate him, but the game did not restart.

Players from both teams cried, some could be seen praying, as drama unfolded on the pitch. The league game between the Dutch first division soccer teams RKC Waalwijk and Ajax Amsterdam was canceled in the 84th minute due to a serious hit to the head by Waalwijk’s goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen. Ex-Leipzig player Brian Brobbey (21) accidentally hit Vaessen in the head as he tried to make it 4-2 for Ajax as he fell out of his goal – the keeper collapsed and remained motionless.

The referee immediately stopped the game, paramedics rushed to take care of Vaessen behind the curtains and, in accordance with safety protocol, also carried out resuscitation measures because Vaessen did not react.

Shortly afterwards, the goalkeeper regained consciousness, was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and taken to hospital a short time later. “He was responsive again but couldn’t remember what had happened. I would like to pay a big compliment to the doctors. They immediately revived him because he was unresponsive. This is the medical protocol. Luckily,” said RKC director Frank van Mosselveld.

The game did not restart

The fact that Vaessen was unconscious had nothing to do with his heart: “It had to do with the blow he received on the side of the head. This caused him to faint.”

With the score at 3-2 for Ajax, the game was not restarted after consultation with both teams. “This is about more than just football. We pray that you are well, Etienne,” Ajax wrote on X.

It is the club’s second game in the Eredivisie within a week that had to be abandoned. Last Sunday, the duel between Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam was also broken off prematurely when the score was 0-3 after Ajax fans threw fireworks onto the pitch several times. The game ended last Wednesday. Ajax lost 0:4 against their arch rivals.
