This summer he said he was suffering from ”acute Sanremite” and that he already had a song ready from last year which he would present to Amadeus with the aim of returning as a singer competing at the Sanremo Festival because ”Sanremo is the competition” ‘, Al Bano underlined to time.news. No sooner said than done, the lion from Cellino reveals that between 10 and 12 November he will finish recording his new song which he hopes will bring him back into competition for the sixteenth time on the Ariston stage: “Initially I wanted to present a different one but this one in my opinion it’s a bomb – he tells time.news – now it’s time for top secret. What I can say is that, as always, I will sing current events. In reality, I still have to record the song, the music is already ready, the lyrics are still missing I like to compete and I will compete”.

”When I chose ‘Felicità’ – says the singer – I did it because after 10 years of ‘singing lament’, sometimes even very interesting, I add, it seemed right to me to also enter into the field of simplicity, to send the message that you can find in the small things that you don’t find in the big ones”. Al Bano participated in the Sanremo Festival 15 times, 10 as a soloist and 5 as a couple with his ex-wife Romina Power.

“I was born in Cellino but I was reborn in Milan, they were the years of great sacrifice”

Al Bano Carrisi retraces his life with time.news, from his escape from Cellino San Marco, his native town, to pursue his passion for singing that began when he was a child: ”From ’61 to ’67 I contributed to support my family – he says – I was a waiter, a worker and a laborer but this gave me the joy of making myself useful to give more well-being to my family. I was born in Cellino San Marco but I was reborn in Milan because Milan is a completely different dimension of life. I thank that boy who had the desire to escape from his roots to create others with the desire to choose the place where he felt he felt good. Those were the years of great sacrifice but I didn’t care, I had already made many while staying in Cellino. I have always loved Puglia, in fact I later returned, but then I couldn’t afford that luxury, I had to do a lot to then say: ‘Now I feel good here in Puglia”.

Then comes success ”which inevitably creates envy – explains Al Bano – When my father went from a mule to 50 horses and a tractor – he jokes – it aroused a bit of envy”. In Milan Al Bano joined of the Celentano Clan after having responded to an advert from there his path was all uphill. Two years later he signed his first contract and in 1967 he published the 45 rpm single ‘Nel sole’ which proved to be a great recording success and leads to participate in the Rolling Stones’ Italian tour.

During the filming of the film ‘Nel sole’ he met Romina Power who would later become his wife: ”We made eight films together, we fell in love, we had four splendid children and we began an artistic collaboration together. The reason? ‘I was used to seeing my mother and father always together and this union was beautiful so I didn’t feel like going around the world and leaving the family at home. Romina had musicality and she still has it today so I told her: ‘Record this song, ‘Acqua di mare”. The song achieved enormous success and won the 1969 Festivalbar.

“I sang with Romina to keep the family together”

Al Bano has always defined himself as ‘an old-fashioned man’: “Family is fundamental for me, I have had six wonderful children and I am about to become a grandfather for the fourth time (Romina Jr. will give birth in January, ed.) the family is expanding and this gives me enormous joy. From the family comes the other family that surrounds us”, underlines the singer. This year Al Bano also celebrates 50 years of wine production, another great passion of his: “It started in 1973 for a promised to my father, now we are in 2023 and therefore I am turning 50 years as a winemaker”.

The singer, just returned from Georgia where he performed in three concerts also with Romina Power and his daughter Jasmine, has started a tour that will take him around the world: ”I will be in Samarkand, in Mongolia, in Poland, again in Georgia, in Spain and in many other places but it doesn’t cost me any effort because my work fills my life and we are only at the beginning”, he jokes. Regrets? ”I don’t have time for regrets – concludes Al Bano – everything I’ve done, I’ve done out of passion and it’s also worked out well for me. My motto has always been: ‘I am the problem for the problems”’. (by Alisa Toaff)
