Al Haouz Earthquake: “Our presence here responds to a duty towards Morocco, an ally and friend of Spain” (Spokesperson for the Spanish rescue team)
Marrakech – “Our presence here responds first of all to a duty towards Morocco, an ally and friend of Spain,” declared Juan Saldaña Garcia, lieutenant colonel of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME), whose rescue team arrived in Marrakech on Sunday to contribute to the efforts deployed by the Moroccan authorities, following the earthquake that struck several regions of the Kingdom.
He specified, in a statement to MAP, that this competition “responds to specific needs on the ground, formulated in advance by Morocco, and will be deployed in perfect coordination with the Moroccan authorities.”
It should be recalled that search and rescue teams from the United Kingdom, Spain and Qatar are currently deployed, alongside Moroccan rescue teams, in the disaster areas.
The use of offers of support and aid presented by the various friendly and brotherly countries is made on the basis of a precise assessment of needs on the ground by the Moroccan authorities.
The earthquake, which struck several regions of Morocco last Friday, provoked a great wave of solidarity, particularly from several heads of state, government and international institutions, who expressed their condolences and solidarity with the Kingdom and the Moroccan people.
