The Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs in the Government of National Unity, Walid Al-Lafi, visited the Libya Sports Channel, to follow up on the implementation of a comprehensive development plan aimed at modernizing the channel’s studios and equipment, including external transport vehicles, its offices and branches, in accordance with the latest international standards adopted by sports channels.
Al-Lafi indicated during his visit that the plan comes within the framework of the efforts of the National Unity Government to raise the level of the sports channel and develop its content and programs, adding that the developmental steps include training and attracting media cadres specialized in sports media from various parts of Libya, to ensure the provision of high-quality content.

Interview for Time.news: Walid Al-Lafi’s Vision for Sports and Communication in Libya
Editor: Welcome to Time.news! Today, we’re thrilled to have an exclusive interview with Dr. Amin Al-Sharif, a leading expert in media studies and communication in Libya. Dr. Al-Sharif, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Al-Sharif: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss such an important topic.
Editor: Recently, Walid Al-Lafi, the Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs, visited the Libya Sports Channel. This visit came at a time when the government is keen to enhance communication strategies in the country. What do you think are the key motivations behind this visit?
Dr. Al-Sharif: Minister Al-Lafi’s visit is significant on multiple levels. Primarily, it signals a commitment from the Government of National Unity to strengthen the role of sports media in fostering a sense of national identity and unity. Sports often bring people together, and by prioritizing sports channels, the government aims to harness that positive energy to promote unity in a country with diverse cultures and opinions.
Editor: Absolutely, and given the political landscape in Libya, how do you think the media, particularly sports media, can play a role in bridging divides or promoting social cohesion?
Dr. Al-Sharif: Sports media can be a powerful tool for social cohesion. It provides common ground, a shared interest that can transcend political and ethnic divisions. By focusing on local sports achievements and engaging the youth, the media can inspire a collective spirit. It’s about highlighting stories of perseverance and teamwork that resonate with all Libyans, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.
Editor: That sounds promising! During his visit, Al-Lafi likely discussed future initiatives for the channel. What kind of initiatives do you think can be effective in improving the quality of sports coverage and its impact on society?
Dr. Al-Sharif: There are several initiatives that could be impactful. First, investing in training for journalists and sports commentators can enhance the professionalism of sports reporting. Second, creating grassroots programs that encourage youth participation in sports could build a community around healthy competition. Lastly, integrating educational content into sports programming to teach values like teamwork, fairness, and discipline could have far-reaching benefits.
Editor: Those are insightful suggestions! With the rise of digital media, what challenges do you foresee for traditional sports channels in Libya, and how can they adapt?
Dr. Al-Sharif: The shift to digital platforms is indeed a double-edged sword. On one hand, it poses challenges like competition for viewership and the need to innovate. On the other, it opens up new opportunities for engagement. Traditional sports channels must adapt by developing an online presence, leveraging social media to create interactive content and engaging directly with their audiences. They should also consider live streaming and creating on-demand content to appeal to younger viewers who prefer flexibility.
Editor: Digital integration seems essential. Looking ahead, what do you hope to see in the evolution of sports media in Libya?
Dr. Al-Sharif: I hope to see a sports media landscape that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. My vision is for sports channels to act as platforms for discussing broader social issues while also celebrating local and international sports. I would love to see more collaborative projects between the government, the private sector, and civil society that leverage sports media for social good.
Editor: That’s an optimistic vision for the future! Thank you, Dr. Al-Sharif, for sharing your insights today. It’s clear that sports media can serve as a catalyst for positive change in Libya.
