The Presidential Council, in its capacity as the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army, held a meeting this morning in the capital, Tripoli, with the General Staff, to discuss developments in the military and security situation in the western region.

The meeting also discussed the repercussions of the closure of the Sharara oil field and the resulting security instability in the region in general, according to what the media office of the Presidential Council reported.

The Government of National Unity issued a statement confirming that it is following up on the technical and security reports it received regarding the attempt to close the Sharara oil field, which comes within the framework of new attempts at political blackmail.

The government clearly denounced and condemned any attempt to disrupt an important economic artery such as the Sharara field, which represents about 40% of the country’s oil production, with Libya’s share in it amounting to 88%, while the foreign operator’s share is 12%. This would result in the aggravation of the suffering of the Libyan people, who alone paid the price of the repeated oil shutdown crises that caused severe damage to the national economy and negatively affected the lives of our citizens.

The Government of National Unity stressed that oil wealth belongs to the Libyans and should not be used as a pressure card to achieve narrow political or personal goals.

She also stressed that she will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect the interests of the people, calling for the use of reason and the promotion of the interests of the nation and the citizen.
