The Presidentially appointed Central Bank Governor, Mohamed El-Shokry, announced his apology for the duties of the Central Bank Governor without the agreement of the House of Representatives and the State Council, saying, “I leave the camel with its load,” as he put it.

Al-Shukri explained in a statement published on his Facebook account that his requirement for the two legislative bodies to agree was in order to preserve the monetary institution from fragmentation and the impact on its reputation in front of similar monetary institutions in the world.

Al-Shukri reported receiving many calls to enable him, saying, “The methods do not conform to my principles and beliefs,” adding that his professional, job, and ethical history do not allow him to be part of this “nonsense,” as he put it.

Al-Shukri added that the political disputes and squabbling between the two concerned parties, whose political agreements require their agreement, may directly affect the freedom to manage Libyan funds abroad and enable Libyans to benefit from them, according to him.

Al-Shukri explained that he took the legal oath in accordance with House of Representatives Resolution No. 3 of 2018, assigning him the duties of Governor of the Central Bank of Libya.

Al-Shukri said that he will spare no effort, work and experience, relying on Libya’s competencies and expertise to put an end to the exchange rate and liquidity crises, combat inflation and activate the performance of the banking sector to play its role, stressing that this should be in accordance with the applicable legislation, current laws and signed agreements.
