As part of his visit to Germany, the Minister of Local Government in the National Unity Government, Badr al-Din al-Toumi, held a meeting with the Director General of the German Association for Local Public Utilities (VKU) Ingbert Liebing, discussed strengthening cooperation between the Ministry of Local Government and the Association.
During the meeting, “the association’s programs, approaches and mechanisms of work, the services it provides and its relations with municipalities were reviewed.”
The meeting touched on “discussing the approach and mechanisms for providing municipal services, in addition to reviewing the various models of providing municipal services, examining how to improve the quality of services provided to citizens, as well as discussing the challenges facing municipalities in providing services.”
During the meeting, Al-Toumi stressed “the importance of researching and developing successful programs and mechanisms on how to secure and activate the funding sources available for projects in Libyan municipalities, improving the infrastructure and quality of services provided to citizens, and encouraging the trend towards innovation and digital transformation in this path.”
The meeting was attended by the mayors of the municipalities of (Shahat, Masalata, and Zuwaila), the Director of the General Department of Environmental Sanitation Affairs and the Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Organization Affairs.
Yesterday, a delegation representing the National Unity Government, headed by the Minister of Local Government, Badr al-Din al-Toumi, arrived in the German capital, Berlin, accompanied by the mayors of the municipalities of Shahat, Masalata, and Zuwaila, the Director of the Ministry’s General Department of Environmental Sanitation Affairs, and the Director of the International Cooperation Office, in response to an official invitation, to discuss all bilateral cooperation programs in the governance sector. Al-Toumi and his accompanying delegation visited the headquarters of the German Parliament in the capital, Berlin, where they were received by Christoph Hoffmann, Chairman of the Economic Cooperation and Development Committee of the German Parliament.
During the visit, a meeting was held with the participation of members of the Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committees of the German Parliament, during which “joint cooperation programs between the State of Libya and the Federal Republic of Germany were discussed.”
The Minister praised “the advanced level of cooperation between the two countries, and the successes achieved by the German-Libyan partnership in several areas in Libya, including supporting digital transformation programs, empowering women, and enhancing the role of youth within the various levels of local administration in Libya.”
He pointed out “the importance of continuing mutual visits between officials of the two countries, with the aim of deepening relations and developing joint programs in all areas of cooperation, supporting training programs and raising capabilities, and providing equipment to Libyan municipalities to support their activities and improve the level of services provided to citizens.”
For his part, the Chairman of the Economic Cooperation and Development Committee of the German Parliament stressed “the importance of continuing cooperation between Germany and Libya,” pointing to “the promising investment opportunities for German companies in the Libyan market, especially in the fields of technology, solid and liquid waste management, electricity, and renewable energies.”
