Jallikattu competitions are held in Madurai Avanyapuram, Palamedu and Alankanallur on the occasion of Pongal festival.
In turn, the Muniandi Sami, Kaliamman and Muthalamman temple festivals will be held in Alankanallur. It is customary for the jallikkattu to take place there in succession. That is, the Alankanallur Jallikkattu is held every year on the 3rd of January.

The car was given as the first prize to a breeding bull by Tamilchelvan from Kaikurichi village in Pudukkottai district who was a lion’s dream for the players in the field.

45 people were injured
A total of 45 people, including cowherds, owners, spectators and policemen, were injured in the Alankanallur jallikkattu competition. 26 of them were admitted to Madurai Government Hospital for further treatment. Those with minor injuries were treated by a medical team there. About 2,000 policemen from 6 districts were on security duty at the event.
