Francesco Alberoni experienced the youth protests of 1968 in the dual capacity of sociology scholar and rector of the University of Trento. “I also commanded with examples – the scholar recounted in an article for ‘Panorama’ in 2000 – I chose to show that I was never afraid of anything and to say clearly that everyone had the right to speak; I introduced the right to tiredness in the university that could be proclaimed during lectures or seminars”.

In that period professors and rectors embodied authority and Alberoni chose to follow paths that reduced the distances between the teaching staff and the students. Another of Alberoni’s innovative ideas was that of changing clothing: keeping the jacket, the sociology professor abandoned his shirt and tie, replaced by a turtleneck sweater. “The students consider it informal clothing and for this reason they appreciated it – he said – Once I put on a red turtleneck and went to the assembly, asking: ‘Did you see that beautiful sweater?’ and everyone laughed.” After the dispute, Alberoni continued to always dress with turtlenecks under his jacket. “I had started wearing turtlenecks to protect myself from a sore throat…”
