“Today I’ll only drink one” – the famous “one beer” usually quickly turns into two or three. Excessive drinking is not only punished with a hangover the next morning, it also has a lasting impact on health.
Liver cirrhosis, stroke and cancer are just a few known excessive risks alcohol consumption. Now researchers evaluated Chinese data. The result: Alcohol causes more diseases than previously thought.
The discussion about alcohol
It is estimated that three million people die every year from the effects of alcohol. While institutions such as the National Health Service consider a small glass of wine or half a liter of beer a day to be harmless, the WHO regards alcohol as fundamentally harmful.
Science is divided. On the one hand, the thoughtful consumption of alcohol should lower the LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol form, on the other hand, even low consumption can lead to high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia. What is true?
To get to the bottom of this question, researchers from Oxford, Peking University and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences worked for one Study together.
More than half a million data
The scientists were able to view 512,000 health records from a Chinese database, including information on drinking behavior. The average age of the people was 52 years. A third of the men drank alcohol at least once a week. For women it was only two percent.
Due to the low alcohol consumption, the women’s health data could act as a “control group”. Aim of the study: The connection between increased disease risks in men due to alcohol consumption.
To do this, the researchers used data from twelve years and analyzed 207 diseases for alcohol-related outbreaks.
Increased risk of 60 diseases in men
In addition to 28 diseases classified by the WHO as alcohol-related, such as colon or liver cancer, the study shows a further 33 diseases, such as gout and stomach ulcers.
According to the study, after every four drinks, the risk of an alcohol-related illness increases by 14 percent.
