Peru has waited many years to conclude the extradition process of the former president Alexander Toledo, involved in a series of corruption cases during his government between 2001 and 2006.
After several attempts to remain in California using a series of judicial mechanisms, Toledo arrived this Sunday morning in the Peruvian capital to be brought before the courts. Shortly after his arrival at the Lima international airport, Toledo was taken to the court of the National Superior Court to confirm his identity and formally notify him of the corruption charges against him.

The Lava Jato Special Team prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez He declared to the journalists after the proceeding that the case against Toledo “is a fairly solid case” and added that he hoped that “the Judiciary could schedule the hearings in a more continuous way” to discuss the substantive issues and “present the evidence to go to trial.” “The expectation of the Prosecutor’s Office is to conclude the cases as soon as possible, now it depends on the Judiciary who schedules the hearings,” he noted.
His extradition to Peru is due to a long process but one that points to one of the clearest cases of corruption directed from the presidential office of the Government Palace. He is accused of receiving a bribe of up to 31 million dollars (about 28 million euros) from Odebrecht –a Brazilian construction company involved in multiple corruption houses– in exchange for favoring him in the tender for a section of the Interoceanic highway during his tenure.
