On Tuesday, Aleksey Evgrafov, a member of the Narva city council, announced on his Facebook page that a response had been received from the State Chancellery regarding the issue of a monument to the people of Prinarov in Victory Park.

“Positive news has just arrived, which concerns a monument located in Võidu Park near the former Gerasimov House of Culture. It is dedicated to the inhabitants of the Prinarov villages who died in the period from 1941 to 1945. This monument was on the “black list” of the working group on Soviet monuments and was under threat of dismantling. Active citizens and members of the temporary commission of the city meeting on historical heritage immediately reacted to this. A number of meetings were organized and an appeal was made to disagree with the verdict of the working group.

Today the Mayor of Katri Raik sent a response to the State Chancellery, in which the Secretary of State pointed out that the decision of the commission is advisory in nature and the final decision should be made by the city government.

In a letter sent to me, Katri Rajk assured me that the government is not going to remove this monument from public space!”
