The seizure of 5.5 kilos of dogfish meat (Mustelus sp.) in a restaurant in Bogotá has set off alarm bells in the Colombian capital, leading the Attorney General’s Office to request a detailed explanation of the control measures in the marketing of protected species.

The Bogotá’s Environment Secretariat, under the direction of Adriana Soto Carreño, must submit a comprehensive report on the strategies and actions implemented to regulate the sale and marketing of sharks and rays in the city. This demand for transparency and control was made after a citizen’s complaint led to the seizure of a Pacific food restaurant in the town of Teusaquillo.

In the official statement, the Attorney General’s Office cited Resolution No. 0766 of 2024 of the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority (AUNAP). This regulation establishes clear guidelines for the management, administration and control of incidental catches of sharks and rays, as well as specific measures for their sustainable use throughout the national territory.

The seizure not only reflects a problem of control and compliance with environmental regulations, but also highlights the urgent need to strengthen policies for the protection and conservation of endangered marine species. The Environment Secretariat will now have to demonstrate how it is facing this challenge and what concrete actions are being taken to ensure compliance with current regulations.

The Attorney General’s Office will continue to closely monitor this case and the actions of the Ministry of the Environment to ensure that the necessary measures are taken to protect marine species in Bogotá.
