Wheat planting in the core region faces a worrying challenge due to lack of water and the prospect of a warm winter.

According to a report from the Strategic Guide for Agriculture (GEA) of the Rosario Stock Exchange (BCR), around 10% of the area destined for wheat planting could be left out due to low rainfall.

The lack of humidity also affected areas such as Sancti Spiritu, south of Santa Fe, where barely 37 millimeters of rain were recorded in May and none in June. In the northwest of Buenos Aires, planting is stagnant at 50% due to the lack of humidity that makes it difficult to incorporate new lots.

Resign planting areas

However, not all the news is negative. In some areas, such as the center-south and southeast of Santa Fe, some lots have been added to the wheat sowing, and in the northeast of Buenos Aires, 95% of the wheat has already been planted. Despite this, in the southeast of Córdoba there has been a significant reduction in the planted area compared to the previous year.

It is estimated that the wheat area for the 2023/24 season in the core region could decrease by 15-23% compared to the previous season. The month of June has been particularly challenging, with an 80% drop in precipitation and above-normal temperatures. The forecasts indicate a low probability of rain in the coming days, which further complicates the situation.

The technicians expressed their concern about the low water reserve and the high temperatures, which could affect the potential yield of wheat if adequate rains do not occur at the end of August and beginning of September. The lack of cold also represents a risk for the formation of tillers and limits the potential of the crop.

Faced with this situation, producers are taking preventive measures and resigning planting areas in the western fringe of the Pampas region. The hope resides in the arrival of better climatic conditions that allow resuming planting and increasing the area devoted to wheat. However, uncertainty persists and the agricultural sector is waiting for a change in the climate outlook.
