An international report exposes scientific advances and gaping holes in current knowledge, shedding new light on conservation emergencies.

A new report on the State of the World’s Plants was released on October 11 by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, during an international symposium. Some 200 researchers from around a hundred institutions from 30 different countries contributed to its writing. This is the fifth such study. The first was published in 2016, with an ambitious goal: to take stock of the world’s flora. Over the years, there has been a focus on specific areas, such as plants for pharmaceutical use or the little-known kingdom of mushrooms. With its two centuries of history and its impressive collections of plants and seeds classified as UNESCO heritage, the British scientific organization is a world reference for research and conservation of the planet’s plant heritage.
