Alert: Severe Storms Warning in Bavaria – Level 3 Alert Issued by DWDreaching Up to Midnight

Severe storms can currently occur in the south of Bavaria – the German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of this. The level 3 warning applies to the southeastern districts of Upper Bavaria, southern Upper Palatinate and large parts of Lower Bavaria – until around midnight

There could be heavy downpours with rainfall of up to 40 litres per hour and square metre, as well as gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour and hail with a grain size of about three centimetres.

What should be kept in mind in case of a severe weather warning?

According to the DWD, in the affected areas there is a danger to life and limb from lightning, occasional fallen trees and falling objects; rapid flooding of roads/underpasses and basements. Aquaplaning may also occur, landslides and hail are also possible. Being outdoors or near water bodies should be avoided at all costs and shelter should be sought, for example in buildings.

In addition, for example, scaffolding and free-standing objects should be secured, tents and covers should be attached or, if possible, dismantled in a timely manner. The DWD advises to adapt behavior in road traffic and plan for obstacles on traffic routes. Information on the flood situation can be found here.

Advance warning for the south until the early hours of Saturday

The advance warning for severe thunderstorms also applies to the districts and cities of Miesbach, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Ebersberg, the districts and cities of Munich, Dachau, Freising, Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Kelheim, the districts and cities of Landshut, the districts and cities of Eichstätt, the district and city of Regensburg – until around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Locally heavy rainfall of up to 40 litres per square metre within an hour should be expected, as well as local heavy thunderstorms up to 100 kilometres per hour and hail of up to three centimetres. Storms will move east and north-east during Saturday night.
