Alex Schulman’s debut feature Arkipelag
has officially been selected as Sweden’s official entry for the 2027 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, following a competitive selection process by the Swedish Film Institute’s committee.
Sweden’s Oscars Selection for 2027
The Swedish Film Institute announced that the drama will represent the country in the international race for the upcoming Academy Awards. The announcement places the author and podcaster’s first foray into filmmaking directly into the global spotlight ahead of a scheduled October theatrical release.
Schulman admitted being completely overwhelmed by the designation as a first-time director. Speaking at a press event at Filmhuset in Stockholm, he described an initial wave of disbelief and excitement upon learning the news.
It feels incredible. Since this is my first movie, it is completely overwhelming.
Inside the Plot of Arkipelag
The film centers on a school trip that spirals out of control in the Stockholm archipelago. The narrative explores complex dynamics between adolescents and adults, while forcing the chaperones to confront their own unresolved youth traumas.
Gustaf Skarsgård, Fares Fares, and Linus Wahlgren star in the lead roles. According to the director, the story draws loosely on his own real-life experience of volunteering as a class parent to bridge a growing distance from his teenage daughter, an endeavor he later characterized as a mistake that pushed them further apart.
The Long Road to the Dolby Theatre
Securing the national nomination is merely the first hurdle in a protracted international campaign. The Swedish Film Institute’s committee selected Arkipelag from a shortlist that also included Jens Sjögren’s Jävla karlar
and Amanda Kernell’s Make the Heart Hard
.
Petter Mattsson, chair of the Swedish Oscar Committee and head of the international unit at the Film Institute, praised the production’s unsettling intensity, noting that the film never leaves the viewer in peace through its uncomfortable humor, awkward realism, and strong performances.
With the domestic selection secured, Schulman faces an extensive promotional push involving screenings for thousands of members within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Behind the Scenes Drama Ahead of Premiere
While the film builds momentum toward its October 9 theatrical release, its path to audiences has encountered friction outside the editing room. Schulman recently aired grievances regarding an unfulfilled attempt to secure a private advance screening of the feature for the Swedish men’s national football team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, citing poor communication and a late response from team management.
Although a subsequent viewing was arranged, during which parts of the staff saw the film, the initial dispute sparked a public exchange over professional courtesy just as the film’s promotional machine entered high gear.
