Alexander-Arnold Returns to England With Decisive Assist Against Czechia

Trent Alexander-Arnold ended his 15-month international absence by providing a decisive assist in England’s 2-0 victory over 10-man Czechia in the UEFA Nations League on September 29, 2026. The Real Madrid defender returned to the starting lineup after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad earlier this year.

Thomas Tuchel Recalls Alexander-Arnold for Nations League Campaign

The defender’s return to the national setup came alongside Cole Palmer as Thomas Tuchel named his squad for the autumn Nations League fixtures. Both players had watched from home as England reached the World Cup semi-finals in North America over the summer. Tuchel made eight changes from his tournament group, bringing in new faces such as Rio Ngumoha, Lewis Hall, and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Just nine weeks after securing a bronze medal in the United States, the German manager selected a 27-man roster for the four-game, three-week Nations League schedule against Croatia, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

The England head coach made it clear that the recalls did not guarantee permanent spots. During the squad reveal, Tuchel noted that both players had forced their way back in through stellar early-season displays for their clubs—specifically citing Palmer’s return of four goals from six outings with Chelsea alongside Alexander-Arnold’s adaptability across different tactical roles at Real—as undeniable justification for an immediate return. For Alexander-Arnold specifically, the manager emphasized that he was never entirely off the selection list.

“They had a good start to the season. They never did something wrong. We just chose different players. So now it is a new competition, some players, some positions have more injuries, some have less injuries. But, Cole has his start that he always had but he has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back so that is why he is in the squad. I think he has a point to prove and the same goes for Trent.”

Clarifying the tactical role planned for Alexander-Arnold, the former Chelsea boss added: He was never off the list, he was never non-selectable for us and it is his chance to show, come to camp and be the best version of himself.

How the Real Madrid Defender Shaped the Win in Prague

Alexander-Arnold made his first start for the Three Lions since a June 2025 World Cup qualifier against Andorra, occupying the right-back position. The match remained scoreless until the Czechs lost Pavel Sulc to a red card at 0-0. Operating from a deeper position in the second half, the full-back delivered the cross that broke the deadlock.

Anthony Gordon met the delivery early in the second half to open the scoring. The 2-0 victory helped the team bounce back from a 3-2 defeat against Spain at Wembley during the international break, where Alexander-Arnold had watched from the bench. Demonstrating his strength on the ball, the full-back completed 32 passes in the final third—trailing only Elliot Anderson’s 41—while contributing three key chances, a tally bettered by only Anthony Gordon’s four.

Player and Manager Reaction to the Assist

Gordon praised his teammate’s vision and technical execution after the match, noting the bravery required to attempt such a pass.

“I make that run time and time again and only a certain number of players have that ability, technique and bravery to be willing to make the mistake trying that pass. That’s why he’s so good and I’ve been dying to play with him for that reason.”

He's had his own journey with England. He would've liked to have played more than he has but he's been a great character during this camp. I've really enjoyed being around him. Gordon

Tuchel also commended the quality of the delivery and Alexander-Arnold’s composure under pressure. The manager noted that the tactical shift during the interval allowed the defender to influence the match more effectively.

We never doubted that he can produce these kind of assists,” Tuchel said. “I think the second half the position, a bit of a deeper position, suited him more than the higher position in the first half. Overall, I think we had a good and professional performance. Of course the red card is such a heavy influence in the game.“We need to keep focused, and Trent was a big help in this, because he’s very secure on the ball.”

Alexander-Arnold reflects on his return to the England squad

Reflecting on his journey back to the national team, Alexander-Arnold admitted that maintaining belief during his time out of the squad was essential. Speaking to ITV Sport after the whistle, the 27-year-old emphasized that his focus remained on performing consistently at club level.

“It was amazing, always an honour and pleasure to represent my country. It’s been a long time but I’ve always believed that I can play for England and I always want to.”

Alexander-Arnold added: The belief is always there, it's about proving it at club level. The manager gave me the chance.
