Alexandra Eala Set to Face Han Shi at Wuhan Open

Alexandra Eala has arrived in Wuhan, China, and learned her first-round opponent as the main draw for the 2026 Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open was confirmed. Seeded No. 13 in the WTA 1000 tournament, the Filipina star opens her campaign on hard courts against Chinese qualifier Han Shi.

Fresh from capturing a women’s singles bronze medal representing the Philippines at the Asian Games in Japan, Alex Eala is back on the WTA Tour for the final stretch of the season at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre. The tournament runs from October 12 to 18, 2026, offering a total prize pool of $4,088,211 alongside 1,000 ranking points for the eventual champion.

Qualifying Hurdles Lead to Han Shi Clash

Eala entered the 56-player singles draw as the No. 13 seed but required an opponent from the qualifying rounds. That spot went to wildcard entrant Han Shi.

The 21-year-old Chinese player booked her main-draw berth by defeating top qualifying seed Peyton Stearns before securing a second win against Kamilla Rakhimova. Having received a wildcard to enter the qualifying bracket in Wuhan this year, Shi successfully capitalized on that break. With a career record of only two main draw WTA match victories, the 21-year-old will nevertheless aim to pull off an upset during her initial encounter with Eala. Eala, meanwhile, is seeking her first-ever match win at the Wuhan Open following early exits in 2024, when she lost in the first round of the main draw as a wildcard entry to Katerina Siniakova, and 2025, when she failed to reach the main draw through qualifying.

Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek, and Marta Kostyuk make up the tournament’s top seeds, and all of them earned byes straight into the second round. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Elena Rybakina and defending champion Coco Gauff are skipping the event, which is part of the season’s Asian Swing. Rybakina withdrew from Wuhan because of a foot injury following her China Open exit.

Potential Rematches Loom in the Draw

If Eala advances past her opening match scheduled for Monday, she faces a demanding projected path through Section 4 of the bracket. Her second-round opponent will likely be Leylah Fernandez or No. 28 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who were pitted against each other as the draw was revealed on Saturday.

Last February at the Abu Dhabi Open quarterfinals, Eala crossed paths with Alexandrova and suffered a 3-6, 3-6 defeat against her opponent. Eala and Fernandez have split their previous two meetings. Eala’s first encounter with Fernandez took place at the Stuttgart Open round of 32 last April, where she was defeated by her fellow lefty with scores of 1-6, 4-6. Last August at the Mubadala DC Open, Eala got payback against Fernandez by eliminating the Fil-Canadian in the round of 16 via a 6–2, 7–6(1) scoreline, eventually capturing the tournament for her maiden WTA trophy. Beyond that lies a potential third-round collision with American star and No. 2 seed Jessica Pegula.

Further potential obstacles in the draw include Jelena Ostapenko or Jessica Pegula in the Round of 16, Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals, and Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals. Looking at the other half of the draw, Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek is projected to emerge as a finalist. Among the currently listed players in the broader tournament field are Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, Marta Kostyuk, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Leylah Fernandez, Iva Jovic, and Alexandra Eala, and that is before qualifiers and any final replacements are inserted into the draw.

Eala Pairs with Sonmez in Doubles Draw

In addition to her singles campaign, Eala teams up with close friend Zeynep Sönmez in the 28-team doubles draw. The Filipino-Turkish pair faces the Ukrainian duo of Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska in the opening round. Their previous tournament appearance as a doubles duo occurred last May at the Madrid Open in Spain, where Eala and Sönmez reached the second round. Her doubles partner Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey also fought her way through the qualifiers, facing Sinja Kraus of Austria.

On the singles rankings front, live updates position Eala at No. 19 with 2,276 total ranking points following Elise Mertens leaping from No. 19 to No. 14, which bumped Eala down from her career-high rank of No. 18. Eala is defending 60 ranking points as she looks to anchor her position during the Asian swing.
