BOLZANO. “These levels of traffic, in the Dolomites, in the valleys, are unsustainable, I absolutely agree”. This was stated by the provincial councilor for mobility Daniel Alfreider, commenting on the results of the conference held yesterday at the Sheraton on the sustainable management of South Tyrolean mountain areas but not only.
The commissioner, however, is not there to receive criticism from di Alpenverein and Italian Alpine Club without replying. In the face of controversy and criticism that he says are not very constructive, it would rather be optimistic, collaborative, proactive.
As the Province of Bolzano, which it has set up, is doing a working group with neighboring regions. In a couple of months, proposals will be sent to Rome. Which will mainly focus on enhancement of public transport, electric, hydrogen, and the electric vehicle recharging network.
Councilor Alfreider, Ladin from Badia, confirms: «The current traffic levels in the Dolomites and in the South Tyrolean valleys are no longer acceptable, we too say so. In particular, I say this as a citizen of these valleys: it is no longer acceptable, we must do something to manage traffic flows, but not to prevent them with bans ».
The question, Alfreider clarifies, is much more complex than we want to trivialize it. If there is even a request from the CAI and Alpenverein to close the Dolomite and non-Dolomite passes, Alfreider limits himself to commenting: “This proposal must be accompanied by an adaptation of the national legislation”. It is useless, Alfreider implies, to abstractly propose a solution, something that on a national basis is not possible, is not feasible, is not achievable. «Instead, we want to enhance those who live in the valleys, those who work in the valleys, those who come to spend their holidays in the valleys. We must work so that the transit traffic is reduced, that the viability is improved ».
The interregional working group, he continues, is working to find the right formula, «Also involving cableway mobility that already exists.
