Algeria wants to take part in the global effort against global warming and is giving diesel vehicles a twist. And this is a first, the government wants to ban the import and construction on the territory of passenger cars running on this fuel considered particularly polluting.

Currently, 40% of vehicles in Algeria are equipped with diesel engines. The other 60% run on gasoline, according to the latest official statistics.

But that won’t be the case for long. From now on, Algerian car dealers will no longer be able to import or locally manufacture diesel cars, a fuel that is cheaper than gasoline in this country. The price fuels in Algeria remains one of the cheapest on the planet.

Dealers will therefore only have to import passenger vehicles equipped with a ” petrol, electric, hydrogen or hybrid engine », i.e. a mix that is petrol/electriceither gasoline/hydrogen or LPG/CNG, or have the ability to be converted into green fuel.

Algeria, on the other hand, wants to develop the use of electric vehicles, and follow the path taken by the Europeans: the latter aim for the end of thermal engines by 2035.

Car manufacturers established in Algeria will have to comply with the same rule and include in their range at least one electric model, within five years of the date of obtaining their approval.
