Algeria: Presidential elections begin across the country

Polling stations opened across Algeria on Saturday to elect a president for a five-year term.

The head of the Independent Election Authority, Mohamed Charfi, said that “the number of voters for the presidential election reached 23,486,061 voters inside the country, 47 percent of whom are women and 53 percent are men, while the number of voters under the age of 40 reached 36 percent.”

He added: “The number of voters residing outside Algeria reached 865,490 voters, 45 percent of whom were women and 55 percent were men, while the number of voters under the age of forty reached 15 percent.”

Voting for Algerian expatriates began last Monday and continues until today, with the electoral body of the Algerian expatriate community comprising 865,490 voters.

According to Algerian media, the voting process for the national community residing abroad continues in strict organizational conditions. It is the last day of voting and closing the ballot boxes, as the polling stations in many countries witnessed a good response and turnout from various categories of the Algerian community, especially young people and students who are continuing their studies at various universities abroad.

The number of candidates is three: the current president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the candidate of the Movement for a Peaceful Society, Abdelali Hassani Cherif, and the candidate of the Socialist Forces Front, Youssef Ouchi. The number of voters in the September 7 presidential elections is 23,486,061 voters inside the country and 865,490 people abroad, according to the results of the exceptional review of the electoral lists announced by the National Independent Authority for Elections in Algeria.

The September 7 presidential election campaign began on August 15 and concluded on September 3.
