The results of a recent study offer a more economical and sustainable alternative to the construction with precast concrete frames of transport infrastructure, such as underground tunnels and other structures.

The study was carried out by Andrés Ruiz-Vélez, Julián Alcalá and Víctor Yepes, from the Institute of Concrete Science and Technology (ICITECH), dependent on the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) in Spain.

In their work, framed within the Hydelife project, they have developed different algorithms whose application allows economic savings of up to 24% in the final cost of the structure, reducing the costs associated with the production and transport of materials.

In addition, according to the estimates made by the ICITECH team, it would make it possible to optimize the use of materials in the structure and reduce around 30% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with construction.

“Let’s think of a linear work where we have, for example, 1000 meters of an underground tunnel that can be executed with prefabricated frames. In addition to the economic savings, in our work, we estimate that the reduction of 1 euro in the final cost of a reinforced concrete frame is equivalent to avoiding the emission of about 2 kilograms of CO2”, points out Víctor Yepes.

Thus, this study presents a resource-efficient and sustainable alternative to traditional cast-in-place reinforced concrete frames.

“Our objective was to broaden the knowledge about the structural typology of articulated precast concrete frames (RCCPF) and its use as a substitute for traditional cast-in-place reinforced concrete frames. And the results we have obtained confirm its enormous potential for large infrastructures. The study is of special interest for fields such as civil engineering and architecture and, above all, for precast concrete companies”, concludes Víctor Yepes.
