Among the 12 candidates who have declared their candidacy for the Supreme Council member at the Democratic Party of Korea’s national convention to be held on the 18th of next month, all of them are classified as members of the strong pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) faction. It seems that this will be an unprecedented election in which all five of the Supreme Council members will be from a single faction, the pro-Myung faction. Ahead of the preliminary primary (cutoff) on the 14th, the Supreme Council members are each declaring, “We will open the era of President Lee Jae-myung,” and “We ran after consulting with former leader Lee Jae-myung,” and are heating up the “loyalty competition,” and some are pointing out within the party that “Myeong (明) is lining up to become the best.”
● The next five supreme council members are expected to be ‘all strong pro-Myeong supporters’
According to Democratic Party officials on the 7th, all 12 people who have declared their candidacy for the party convention or have confirmed their candidacy are all evaluated as having a strong pro-Myeong tendency within the party. During the declaration process, each of them emphasized that they are “the right people to run the party together with former Chairman Lee.”
On this day, three-term lawmaker Lee In-joo held a press conference at the National Assembly and said about former leader Lee, “He is the strongest (presidential) candidate, and there is no other suitable alternative.” Four-term lawmaker Kim Min-seok, who had previously declared his candidacy, said, “I will become the head of Lee Jae-myung’s administration plan headquarters,” and two-term lawmaker Kang Sun-woo, a former party spokesperson, said, “I will open the era of President Lee Jae-myung.” Two-term lawmaker Han Jun-ho, who served as Lee’s chief of staff during the presidential election, said, “I chose former leader Lee as a leader to accompany me,” and two-term lawmaker Kim Byung-joo said, “I will stand at the forefront of creating a Lee administration.” First-term lawmaker Lee Seong-yoon, who served as the head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office under the Moon Jae-in administration, claimed about former leader Lee’s judicial risks, “The prosecution is conducting political investigations and political indictments day and night.”
Former lawmaker Jeong Bong-ju, who has thrown down the gauntlet as an outsider; Deputy Spokesperson Kim Ji-ho, who worked in Gyeonggi Province when former Representative Lee was governor; Cheongju City Councilor Park Wan-hee, a member of the pro-Myung faction and co-chair of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Anyang Mayor Choi Dae-ho, a member of the Korea Democratic League (KDLC) to which former Representative Lee belongs, are all considered pro-Myung figures. Three-term Representative Jeon Hyeon-hee, who served as the chair of the party’s anti-terrorism committee after the attack on former Representative Lee, announced on the 8th that she would be running for reelection; and second-term Representative Min Hyeong-bae, who former Representative Lee appointed as the party’s strategic planning committee chairman, are also expected to announce their candidacy soon.
As the number of candidates for the Supreme Council has exceeded 9, the Democratic Party will hold a cutoff on the 14th to narrow down 8 candidates for the general election and select the final 5 at the party convention. In particular, as the weight of the votes of the party members who have rights is reflected in the Supreme Council cutoff at 50% and in the general election at 56%, the voices appealing to the votes of the pro-Myeong strong party members are growing louder. A Democratic Party official said, “The more strong the party members, the higher the voter turnout,” and “From the perspective of the candidates who have to be conscious of the cutoff, it is a situation where they cannot help but be more heated in the ‘competition for the heart’.”
● Lee Jae-myung to declare candidacy as early as the 9th
Former Representative Lee is expected to officially declare his intention to run for reelection as early as the 9th. It has been reported that former Representative Lee recently opened an election office near the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, and is working hard to write a declaration of candidacy with his staff.
In his declaration of candidacy, the former representative plans to include his demand for a change in President Yoon Seok-yeol’s state administration, as well as his determination to engage in politics that are responsible and produce results in areas such as livelihoods, the economy, future food, foreign affairs, and security. A key source from the former representative’s camp said in a phone call, “We will emphasize our role as an ‘alternative opposition party’ in a situation where many citizens, including the self-employed, small and medium-sized businesses, and laborers, are suffering,” adding, “We will also reveal a plan for a basic society, including an economic transformation to raise the growth rate of the Korean economy to 3%.”
Former lawmaker Kim Du-kwan, who officially announced his candidacy as the opposition candidate to former leader Lee, resigned from his position as Gyeongnam provincial party chairman and began preparing for the party leadership election. An official from former lawmaker Kim’s side said, “In order to win the presidential election, the presidential power and party power must be separated, and the party must not be swayed by a small number of strong party members.”
