Anne Arundel County Public Libraries will offer free gun insurance as part of a health department program, which the county says is the first of its kind in the state.
Insurance will be available starting Monday at all 15 county libraries. Residents over the age of 18 can receive up to two insurances per residence, per day. Proof of residency is not required.

“Research shows that safe storage plays an important role in reducing the risk of gun violence, unintentional death, and suicide. The goal of the program is to mitigate the risk of harm or death by providing firearms owners with a free resource to ensure their safety.” the county reported on its website.
People will receive the lock as well as instructions on how to use it, and materials with information on safe gun storage, suicide prevention, and other important information.
According to the county, the pilot program began in April at three public libraries. By June, the insurance was offered at six libraries due to its popularity.
