A fire caused the collapse of one of the car parks. 1,200 cars were involved in the accident

A fire has caused the closure of London’s Luton airport, the fifth largest by number of passengers.

“The safety of our passengers and staff remains our main priority: we have therefore taken the decision to suspend all flights until 12pm”, announced the airport authorities, who then extended the suspension until 2pm (i.e. 15 in Italy).

The accident occurred during the night in one of the car parks, which partially collapsed due to the damage from the fire.

Four firefighters who responded to the scene and an airport employee were later taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. Approximately 1,200 cars were reportedly involved and damaged in the accident.

Vehicle alarms and loud explosions were heard, while one witness described the speed with which the fire spread to the upper level of the car park as “incredible”.
