On September 1, 2024, citizens in Saxony and Thuringia will elect a new state parliament. As with federal elections or other state elections, eligible voters in Saxony can also cast their vote by postal vote. This also applies to Thuringia. Postal voting is ideal for anyone who is unable to attend or who wants to avoid going to the polling station. t-online provides you with the most important information.

Anyone eligible to vote in Saxony can use postal voting without having to give a specific reason. All German citizens over the age of 18 who have had their main residence or permanent residence in Saxony for at least three months are eligible to vote. It is important to apply for postal voting documents in good time.

Postal voting documents can be requested upon receipt of the election notification:

Online: You can apply for postal voting on the Saxony state website. This is usually possible from about six weeks before election day.

Per Post: There is a form enclosed with the voting notification. You must fill it out, sign it and send it by post to the address provided.

Personal: You can also apply for the documents in person at the municipality or city.

You will receive a ballot paper, the voting slip, a green ballot envelope, a yellow ballot envelope and an information sheet on postal voting. After filling out the ballot paper, place it in the green ballot envelope, sign the ballot paper and send both back together in the yellow ballot envelope.

You can apply for postal voting until Friday, August 30th at 4 p.m. In exceptional cases – such as a sudden illness – the application can even be submitted on election day itself. In both cases, however, you should collect the documents in person at the office and then return them, as delivery by post is no longer possible in time.

The ballot must be received by the electoral authority by 4 p.m. on election day, i.e. Sunday, September 1, 2024. The website sachsenwahl.de recommends that the ballot should be sent no later than the third working day before the election so that it arrives on time. The postage costs are already included, so you can easily put the envelope with the voting documents in the mailbox or hand it in to the municipality.
