Washington Abrams to stay in casino until 8am, play at 1pm
Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams (23) of the US Major League Baseball (MLB) was demoted to the minor league after it was revealed that he was at a casino all night before a daytime game.
ESPN reported on the 22nd (Korean time), citing sources, that the Washington club notified Abrams of its intention to send him to the minor leagues.
Abrams was traded to Washington’s Triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings.
“I just want it to be known that it wasn’t a performance issue,” Washington manager Dave Martinez said. “It’s an internal matter. I’m not going to get into specifics.”

Washington played a day game that started at 1 p.m. local time on the 20th, and Abrams stayed at the casino until 8 a.m. Abrams, who started the game after staying at the casino all night, was sluggish, going 0-for-3.
If Abrams believes the team’s punishment is unfair, he can appeal through the Major League Baseball Players Association. ESPN reported that Abrams would lose about $30,000 (about 40 million won) of his $752,000 (about 1 billion won) salary if he misses the final week of the season.
Abrams, who made his major league debut in the San Diego uniform in 2022, was traded to Washington that year.
Having grown into a key shortstop, he caused a sensation in the first half of this year, hitting .268 with 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 89 games. He was also selected as an All-Star for the first time in his life.
However, he fell into a slump in the second half with a batting average of 0.203 and failed to overcome his defensive weaknesses throughout the season.
The team did not give up on his expectations, but immediately notified him of his move to the minor leagues due to this controversy.
