There has been a water dispenser in the municipal high school since the summer holidays. All Selm schools are now equipped with water dispensers. This was possible thanks to some sponsors. A year ago, Selm politicians had a heated argument about free drinking water in Selm schools. In April 2023 it was clear: the city administration wanted to equip all schools with water dispensers – only the financing still had to be clarified. The city is now proudly announcing its implementation: all schools in Selm can provide their students with drinking water free of charge.

“All Selm students now have the opportunity to easily and easily meet their daily water needs in schools,” says the city of Selm. Water dispensers were purchased for all primary school locations, the Selm Municipal High School and the Selma-Lagerlöf Secondary School, from which the students can easily tap their water. The dispensers have a fixed connection and can dispense still or carbonated water.

If you want to think clearly at school, you should drink enough. For example, experts recommend that elementary school students drink a liter of water a day. The city of Selm reports that this would be around 400 to 600 milliliters spread over the school day. “All Selm students now have the opportunity to easily and easily meet their daily water needs in schools,” said city spokesman Malte Woesmann in the statement.

Thousands of liters have already been tapped

There were also critical voices in the first political discussions about water dispensers in schools. The CDU and FDP councilors had criticized that the cash-strapped city of Selm should not spend any money on this because no student had died of thirst yet. A “fully comprehensive mentality” was also criticized. However, the majority in the council was in favor of the administration examining the possibility of setting up water dispensers.

The city administration was now satisfied: “The children and young people no longer have to bring their own water. This is especially good in the summer months,” explained Selm’s councilor Sylvia Engemann at an appointment at the municipal high school. One of the water dispensers has been there since the end of the summer holidays. “This has been very well received,” reported school principal Viola Löchter. The high school students have drawn off over 2,000 liters of water since the summer holidays.

Companies and clubs donated

The equipment for all Selm schools was made possible with the help of sponsors. Donations for the water dispensers came from Volksbank Selm-Bork eG, Fahrzeugbau Wüllhorst, the Selmer Help Selmer association and Heinz-Georg Mors.
