Xelafer 2024, the Central American Independence Fair
In the month of September Quetzaltenango celebrates one of the most anticipated events of the year: the Central American Independence Fairknown as Khalafar. This year, in its 2024 editionThe fair celebrates 140 years of history since its creation in 1884, consolidating itself as an emblematic cultural event that fills the inhabitants of the region with pride and joy.
Khalafer 2024 It will be held from September 7 to 22 with various activities including parades, concerts, rides, typical snacks and much more.
Tradition and Culture in Xelafer 2024
Official activities began in August with events such as the election of the Indigenous Queen of Quetzaltenango, also known as Umial Tinimit Re Xelajuj No’j. However, the official opening of the fair was held on September 7 at the Quetzaltenango Trade Fair and Marketing Center —CEFEMERQ—a space where many of the recreational activities will be concentrated, such as mechanical games and food sales.
The main venues of the fair include the Quetzaltenango Municipal Theater, City Hall, and Central Park, where various cultural and artistic events take place. For nearly three weeks, the fair will be the epicenter of festive activities that commemorate both Guatemala’s Independence and Quetzaltenango’s rich cultural legacy.

Sunday, September 8:
- 2:30 pm Arrival of the queens and caravan in the city of Quetzaltenango.
- 4:00 pm “Marimba Sunset” Concert with Marimba Chapinlandia.
- 6:00 pm Miss Sports election and coronation.
Monday, September 9:
- 8:00 am Inaugural parade of the Primary Level.
- 10:00 am Official inauguration of the Xelafer Fair 2024.
- 5:00 pm Presentation of the queens to the people of Quetzaltenango.
Tuesday, September 10:
- 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Free games for underprivileged children.
Thursday, September 12:
- 8:00 am Pre-primary level exam.
- 6:30 pm Coronation of the Queen of Floral Games.
Friday, September 13:
- 8:00 a.m. Caminata Intercultural.
- 9:00 am Commemoration of the Fallen Martyrs.
- 6:00 pm Xelafer Concert with Grupo Rana.
Saturday, September 14:
- 6:00 pm Independence Concert.
- 12:00 am Cry of Independence and message from the municipal mayor.
Sunday, September 15:
