How do you explain the theft of two ATMs installed in a bank in the Havana municipality of Marianao, specifically, on Avenida 51 between streets 124 and 128? How do you explain that alleged thieves have forced the door that gives access to this Metropolitan Bank and have looted its ATMs, in a place that has, or should have, reinforced security?
The residents of the place, near the Plaza de Marianao, were shocked to see that they could only see some holes in the wall where they were installed.
Everything indicates that one day before the robbery, agents from the state-owned company Trasval had filled it with cash. The thieves, at night, not only stole that money, they also dismantled “all the front equipment of the ATMs” and carried them off.
The strangest thing of all is that the alleged robbery happened in a high-traffic place, even at night. For their part, the authorities detained and investigated several Trasval workers, since it is suspected, according to several reports from independent media, that the thieves had specific knowledge about the company’s ATMs and security protocols.
TRASVAL, remember, is responsible for the transfer of monetary assets and other values to and from banks throughout the country. And it also has a modern fleet of armored and escort cars as well as well-trained personnel authorized to carry high-caliber weapons on public roads.
Several residents of the area indicate that the perpetrators of the robbery broke the door of the metal container that protected the four ATMs.
Five years ago, in 2018, the looting of ATMs located on Carlos III Avenue, corner of Márquez González, in the Centro Habana municipality was reported. Therefore, as unusual as this case may seem, it is not surprising that it happens in today’s Cuba.
