Colombia is the most dangerous country for environmentalists, followed by Brazil, Mexico and Honduras, Global Witness said in its annual report. In general, 85% of all murders of environmentalists are registered in Latin America.

“As the climate crisis escalates, those who use their voices to fearlessly defend our planet face violence, intimidation and murder,” said report author Laura Furones. “Our data shows that the number of homicides remains alarmingly high. This situation is simply not acceptable.”

The report notes that life is particularly dangerous for activists protesting mining, fishing, deforestation, industrial agriculture, road and infrastructure construction, and hydroelectric power generation.

“Governments must not stand idly by. They must act decisively to protect environmentalists and address the causes of violence to which they are subject,” Furonesa emphasized.

“Activists and their communities are essential in efforts to prevent and repair the damage caused by climate-destroying industries. We can no longer afford and must not accept the loss of life,” added the author of the report.
