Almost all extreme weather events of 2023 were caused by global warming

DECRYPTION – An international consortium noted the role of human activity in 23 of the 26 disasters they studied in 2023. Heatwaves, droughts and floods are becoming more and more likely, and more and more violent.

The heat records broken during 2023 were accompanied by an unusually high number of extreme weather events, between droughts, floods and heatwaves, on all continents. « Since 2015, we have never had so many extreme events of such severity that they would have merited an attribution study, to see whether or not they were linked to the effects of climate change caused by human activities. », explains Friederike Otto, climatologist at the Grantham Institute at Imperial College in London and co-founder of the WWA (World Weather Attribution) consortium during a press conference. « In total, 120 events during the year each affected more than 1 million people or caused more than a hundred deaths, which is unheard of. »
