AI for both homework and entertainment

Last month, a study commissioned by the technology company Samsung in the Baltic States revealed that AI and its tools are particularly popular among teenagers.

Almost every second respondent from Lithuania said that they mostly use AI and its tools to complete homework and other school tasks (45%). Meanwhile, in Estonia, 39% use artificial intelligence for learning. students, and in Latvia – as much as 49 percent. of those interviewed.

It is interesting that in all three countries (14 percentage points on average) older students (17-19 years old) use AI tools more often compared to lower grade students (14-16 years old). Lithuanian schoolchildren mostly use AI and its tools for learning purposes 1-2 times a month (36 percent of those surveyed).

A slightly smaller share of the respondents – 26 percent. – answered that he uses this technology for entertainment. Also, more than a fifth (23%) of Lithuanian schoolchildren use AI tools installed on their smartphones. For a fifth of Lithuanian schoolchildren, DI helps them every day in their home routine.

Eglė Tamelytė, head of the “Solve for Tomorrow” project in the Baltic States, says that artificial intelligence among schoolchildren has long ceased to be news.

“The study showed that only 3 percent have never heard anything about AI and its tools. Lithuanian schoolchildren. We can safely say that AI fundamentally changes educational processes. By knowing how to correctly use the advantages provided by AI, students can expand their learning opportunities and adapt learning to their personal needs,” says E. Tamelytė.

Scam or extra learning tool?

Although AI is an extremely popular learning tool among students, the perception that using this tool is cheating is still prevalent. During the survey, it became clear that even 35 percent consider the use of AI as one of the methods of fraud. Lithuanian schoolchildren. However, the majority (48%) of respondents say that they do not think that the use of AI or its tools in school is unfair.

“So far, the tools of artificial intelligence are not so widely integrated in Lithuanian educational institutions – it is likely that this was influenced by the fact that when AI suddenly became popular among schoolchildren and students started abusing it, educational institutions looked for radical ways to solve the problem. Some schools banned the use of AI tools and hoped that the wave of popularity of this technology would subside”, observes E. Tamelytė.

According to her, the trends show that the use of AI in the learning process will only grow, so it is important to try to discover ways in which AI can help students more easily overcome learning challenges and discover new, smart learning tools.

Will look for ways to enable AI in the learning process

The company’s competition “Solve for Tomorrow”, which annually brings together students from the Baltic countries for a common goal, this time will invite you to look for ways to better apply AI in the learning process.

“The competition, which has been going on for several years, has proven that the originality and intelligence of schoolchildren have no limits. Every year, we enjoy their unique ideas that help create a bright, energetic and healthy tomorrow. This time, we will invite schoolchildren from the Baltic countries to look together for technological solutions that would help improve the process of learning and acquiring knowledge with the help of AI”, says E. Tamelytė.

A lot of 9-12 cl. the project that attracts the interest and activity of schoolchildren in the Baltic countries will start on September 9 this year. The authors of the three best ideas will receive as much as 16 thousand. euro prize fund.
