Almuth Schult played for VfL Wolfsburg for years. Now her former club will face FC Bayern in the cup final. The final changing of the guard?
Will the unbelievable winning streak for VfL Wolfsburg continue or will FC Bayern manage to wrest the DFB Cup from the defending champions? This question will be clarified on Thursday from 4 p.m. Almuth Schult will also sit in front of the television and watch the game between the current German champions and her former club from Lower Saxony (2013 to 2022).
She’s not entirely impartial, as she reveals in an interview with t-online: “I can’t help but keep my fingers crossed for Green-White with my story. It’s crazy what a series VfL Wolfsburg has If it were to win the cup, it would be the tenth in a row.”
“That’s really outstanding”
And the eleventh cup victory in the club’s history. Since 2013, when Wolfsburg won the treble, the players have been unbeaten in the cup for 49 games. Schult is certain: “That’s a rate that’s probably unmatched in Germany. I don’t know that this has ever happened anywhere in Germany at the federal level. Even with nine cup wins in a row, that’s outstanding.”
The DFB Cup would be the only title this year. The women of FC Bayern have already secured the championship. In March, the Munich team won 4-0 in Wolfsburg. Even before the game, a statement from Bayern President Herbert Hainer caused unrest. He told the “Kicker”: “We have great respect for VfL Wolfsburg, who have made enormous contributions to German women’s football, but we are well on the way to a changing of the guard here.”
“FC Bayern has never achieved that before”
Schult now comments on this: “There is always talk of a changing of the guard, but FC Bayern has to do a little more to achieve that. The first step would probably be to win the double this year. FC Bayern has never achieved that before, VfL Wolfsburg, on the other hand, several times.” Schult himself was part of the team that achieved this in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.
She is eagerly awaiting the duel on Thursday: “I hope that it will be a football festival. That means a highly attractive, exciting, fast game for the fans. The chances of the outcome are really 50:50. It can go in both directions. There If the two best teams in Germany meet, it will depend on the form on the day and perhaps also with a bit of luck.”
