Formerly a source of life for the local population but also tributaries of the great rivers, the Sarinka River is today threatened by anarchic constructions and especially the illegal dumping of garbage on the bed of the river which dangerously affects its existence.
To remedy this degradation, the prefectural management of the Environment of the prefecture of Coyah proceeded this Monday, July 22, 2024, to the planting of 1000 melina plants along the Sarinka river in order to allow its survival.
Initiator of this activity, Mr Aboubacar Fofana, Prefectural Director of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Coyah hammered home for the occasion: “This is an activity that we are carrying out in parallel with the launch of the reforestation campaign that took place in Tondon in the prefecture of Dubreka. The observation is that our waterways, the mountain slopes and all the critical points, frankly deserve to be reforested today. This is the idea that also led us to Coyah to choose the Sarinka River and all the critical points of Coyah will be reforested through the policy of Madam Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development.
At the same time, I ask the population of Coyah, precisely those who benefit from this watercourse to protect and ensure the preservation of these plants. Because if it is protected, it can save this watercourse.
Representing the Regional Inspector of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Kindia at this activity, Julien Miilomono for his part specified: “This is a task that falls to all of us, a city must not be built only with concrete and iron. Trees must imperatively have their place to create harmony and landscape beauty, thus making the environment fresh and soft, with purified air without forgetting the aesthetic side. On this day, thanks to the dynamism of the prefectural directorate of the Environment and Sustainable Development with the support of the prefectural authority of Coyah, we invite all citizens of the city to become more aware of the role and importance of waterways and trees both on an ecological and social level.”
For the representative of the prefect, Aboubacar Manéah Camara, Director of micro-achievements, this activity must be the business of all Coyahkas. “Today is a memorable day for me and for the offspring. I know that by preserving these trees we can really put an end to the next heatwave, to the next reforestation. But above all it is about preserving and saving what we plant, the protection of the environment in itself, since if we plant and do not save, it is no longer useful for us to do the reforestation.”
“Because of this winter period, let everyone get involved, whether it’s in homes or wherever we are, because it’s a project that will continue right down to the main traffic arteries. Let’s preserve our waterways as we preserve our own souls,” Mr. Camara said.
It should be noted that for this first day of reforestation, 1000 plants were planted along the Sarinka River, not far from the Coyah-Kindia national road.
