Aston Martin is aiming to capitalize on a promising Sprint Qualifying session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso securing P5 on the grid and injecting renewed optimism into a challenging season. The Silverstone-based team, currently embroiled in a tight midfield battle, sees this result as a crucial step toward securing valuable championship points.
A Resurgent Performance in Brazil
Despite a frustrating season marked by inconsistency, Aston Martin demonstrated strong pace at Interlagos, outperforming rivals Racing Bulls and Haas. The team currently trails Racing Bulls by a mere three points, with Haas seven points further back, intensifying the competition for crucial midfield positions. Alonso’s P5 finish, coupled with teammate Lance Stroll’s result just two positions behind, provides a significant opportunity to gain ground in the upcoming Sprint race.
Alonso Emphasizes Positive Start to the Weekend
Reflecting on the day’s performance, a senior team member stated, “The car felt good in FP1 – we were P4 and now we are P5, so it definitely seems like we started the weekend in the window of the operation of the car.” The limited track time – with only one Free Practice session – underscored the importance of a strong initial setup. “With only one Free Practice, obviously if you start on the right foot then everything becomes easier,” the team representative added.
This positive start is viewed as a much-needed morale boost for the entire team. “I think today is a good boost for everyone. We are not giving up, and let’s keep trying every day,” the team member affirmed.
Weather Adds Uncertainty to Sprint Race
However, the team acknowledges the potential for unpredictable conditions during Saturday’s Sprint. With a high probability of rain and wind, the established grid order could be significantly disrupted. “If it was dry, then it would probably be easier to hold the positions, but we expect a wet Saturday so anything can happen tomorrow,” the team representative cautioned.
Despite the looming weather challenges, Stroll expressed the team’s determination to maintain their hard-earned positions. “The car was feeling good and I had some nice laps so I enjoyed it,” Stroll said. “It’s still just Sprint Qualifying so we’ll see tomorrow.” The team’s primary objective remains to consolidate their qualifying performance and translate it into valuable points in the Sprint race.
