The Asturian road passenger transport company Alsa, a subsidiary of the British group Mobico, has reached an agreement with the Spanish company Eco Rail, of the Magtel group, to opt for the next phase of liberalization of rail transport with the aim of qualifying for awarding of both high-speed and commuter and medium-distance services.

The two companies have had a rail transport license and railway safety certificates for years, and the Asturian company already operates in Spain with tourist trains, management of railway terminals in sea ports, training school for train drivers and other services in the railway sector.

Alsa and Eco Rail have been working on the project for three years and plan to incorporate at least a third partner to qualify for the tenders that must be awarded in 2025. The information, advanced by “Expansión”, was confirmed by the two groups to LA NEW SPAIN.

Both companies had already shown interest in entering the provision of commercial railway services in the first release of high-speed passenger transport, which gave rise to the Iryo and Ouigo groups to end Renfe’s monopoly.

The Asturian family Cosmen Menéndez-Castañedo, the largest shareholder of Mobico, in turn leads a consortium with financial and industrial partners to compete with Eurostar, also from 2025, through rail services that link the European continent and the United Kingdom through the Eurotunnel under the English Channel. This project, apart from Mobico, is undertaken by the Cosmen through the Evolyn company. Mobico, which was a large train operator in the United Kingdom, is currently present in the railway sector in Germany and, through Alsa, in Spain.
