Alternative powers: China holds summit with former Soviet republics at the same time as the G7

Chinese President Xi Jinping celebrated this Thursday (18) the beginning of a “new era” in the Asian power’s relations with Central Asian countries, opening an unprecedented summit with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, five former Soviet republics in the region. The two-day event is organized by Beijing in Xi’an, a city that was once the imperial capital and starting point for silk road caravans and coincides with the G7 in Japan.
