Paris: Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat’s Olympic journey ended in the semi-finals of the men’s 57 kg freestyle competition on Thursday. Despite facing top seed Rei Higuchi of Japan, Aman lost 0-10, missing out on the gold medal. However, he still has a chance to secure a bronze medal, which he will fight for against Darian Toi Cruz of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match on Friday at 10.45 pm.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya had previously won silver in the same category at the previous Olympics. Aman qualified for the Games by defeating Ravi in the national selection trials. He had earlier generated high expectations by reaching the semi-finals via technical superiority (12-0) over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakarov in the quarter-finals. In the first round, he secured a point due to Abakarov’s passivity and two points from a takedown. This dominance continued in the second round against Abakarov, a former world champion.
Anshu Malik’s Olympic journey ends in disappointment
Indian wrestler Anshu Malik, competing in her second Olympics, suffered a 2-7 defeat against two-time Olympic medalist and fifth seed Helen Lucy Maroulis in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s 57 kg freestyle event. Maroulis, who had to reach the final to qualify for the repechage, could not secure her place in the repechage. She lost 4-10 to Tsugumi Sakurai of Japan in the semi-finals. Despite a valiant effort, Anshu could only score two points against Maroulis, who dominated the match from the beginning.
