The spending is a show of strength as the company seeks to maintain its position in the cloud services market, where it has about twice the share of second-place Microsoft, according to Bloomberg.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) sales growth slowed to a record low last year as business customers cut costs and postponed modernization projects. Now costs are starting to rise again, and Amazon wants to secure space and electricity for its power-hungry devices.
“We’re adding quite a bit of capacity,” said Kevin Miller, AWS vice president who oversees the company’s data centers. “I think it just gives us an opportunity to get closer to our customers.”
Over the past two years, according to Bloomberg, Amazon has committed to spending $148 billion. US dollars to build and operate data centers around the world. The company plans to expand existing server farms in northern Virginia and Oregon, as well as push into new areas including Mississippi, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia.
Amazon’s planned server spending exceeds the public commitments of Microsoft and Alphabet-owned Google — though neither company discloses data center costs as consistently as Amazon.
Microsoft and Google spokesmen declined to provide comparable figures, adding that each company likely factored different costs into its calculations.
