A year and a half after launch, Amazon decided to discontinue Amp, a streaming of live music. According to information from the portal Daily Mail, The tool’s deactivation is scheduled for October 31st.

Amazon Music vice president Steve Bloom broke the news of the closure in a memo. The reason is the fact that the service did not attract a desirable audience and the number of users fell.

Another determining factor was the series of difficulties that arose after the cuts of 150 jobs – around half of the team – in the Amp division.

Even so, according to the Bloomberg agency, the Amazon executive declared that the decision was difficult and required months of consideration and determination of the next investments.

Beginning and proposal of Amazon Amp

Amp began its activities in March 2022 with the idea of creating a new version of radio, like competitors like Clubhouse. Both allowed you to broadcast voice calls in live rooms.

However, Amazon focused on differentiating its tool in terms of streaming of music and not so much in the chat features. Thus, users could play tens of thousands of hits from Universal, Sony and Warner Music studios in their programs.

Upon launch, the technology signed contracts with prominent names in the world of music. One example is singer Nicki Minaj, who brought Queen Radio. Previously, the channel had already achieved audience leadership on Apple Music.

With the news of Amp’s closure, the station’s listeners expressed dissatisfaction with the need for the channel to migrate to another platform. Comments like “Where the hell is Nicki going to do Queen radio?” have been common among fans.
