Amazon Gipuzkoa delivery men have started an indefinite strike to defend their jobs after the subcontractor Smart Delivery Routes (SDR), which is one of the three companies in charge of delivering Amazon products in the territory, raised last 4 May an Employment Regulation File (ERE) to dismiss 61 people, the entire workforce.

The Amazon contract located in Oiartzun agreed last February with the representation of the workforce (five ELA delegates) to apply the Gipuzkoa Merchandise Transport Sector Agreement, which meant a 38% increase in wages. ELA considers that the collective dismissal is Amazon’s response to the improvement of working conditions at SDR. “It is known that Amazon’s labor relations model is based on precariousness,” says the union. “The American multinational employs a network of subcontracted companies that apply precarious working conditions to increase their multimillion-dollar profits.”

Work inspection

The union has also filed a complaint with the Labor Inspectorate to investigate whether Amazon’s subcontracting network may be operating illegally. At the moment there has been no satisfactory response since the inspection, ELA maintains.

ELA demands both Amazon and SDR to withdraw from the ERE, the maintenance of all jobs, and decent working conditions. In turn, it requests the Basque Government Labor Department to “stop looking the other way” and act in the sense of “investigating Amazon’s network of contractors that, undoubtedly, is based on precarious working conditions, and presumably also , outside the law”.
