The technology company Amazon, one of the largest employers in the United States, notified its staff yesterday of the end of telework. Employees will return to their personal jobs starting next January 2, as announced by the company’s CEO, Andy Jassy, in a note sent to his employees. “We continue to believe that the benefits of being together in the workplace are important,” he said in his letter.
The company’s more than 1.1 million employees in the United States currently have the option to work remotely two days a week, but, starting in January, telecommuting will only be granted “under special circumstances,” to includes that the CEO mentions “a sick child, a household emergency, or home visits to clients.” The return to the offices was delayed until January 2 to make it “as smooth as possible,” as the note clarifies.
Despite emphasizing the “hard work and ingenuity of his team around the world,” the CEO did not want to maintain the work flexibility his employees currently have. It is important “to be united with colleagues to frame and solve difficult problems,” Jassy said in his note.
