Amazon and Google Forge Alliance to Build More Reliable Multi-Cloud Network

A new partnership between Amazon and Google aims to bolster connectivity for businesses increasingly reliant on multiple cloud providers, addressing concerns highlighted by recent major outages. The tech giants on Sunday unveiled a jointly developed network service designed to establish private, high-speed links between their respective computing platforms in a matter of minutes – a significant reduction from the weeks it currently takes.

The initiative comes amid growing anxieties about internet stability, underscored by a disruptive outage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) on October 20. This incident impacted thousands of websites globally, including popular applications like Snapchat and Reddit, and is projected to result in losses ranging from $500 million to $650 million for U.S. companies, according to analytics firm Parametrix.

The new service leverages AWS Multicloud Interconnect and Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect to enhance network interoperability. “This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental change in multicloud connectivity,” stated a senior official at AWS.

The move reflects a broader trend of technology companies – including Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon – investing heavily in infrastructure to accommodate the escalating demands of internet traffic and the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence. The need for increased computing power to support AI applications is a key driver of this investment.

Currently, Amazon’s cloud business leads the market, generating $33 billion in revenue during the third quarter – more than double Google’s $15.16 billion. This new partnership could further solidify the position of both companies as essential providers for businesses adopting a multicloud strategy.

According to a company release, Salesforce is among the first companies to adopt the new approach. A spokesperson for Google Cloud noted that the joint network is intended to simplify the process of moving data and applications between different cloud environments.

The development signals a growing recognition that a more resilient and interconnected cloud infrastructure is crucial for maintaining business continuity in an increasingly digital world.
