Amazon has been under investigation by the commission since March 2021, on suspicion that the Prime service, which offers fast shipping, special deals and Amazon’s video streaming platform, fraudulently added customers and then made it very difficult for them to leave. In June, the commission demanded that the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, and the person who replaced him as CEO of the company last summer, Andy Jaci, appear to testify on the subject. In addition, the commission demanded that Amazon provide it with information about its other subscription services, and stop using the Covington law firm Berling to represent both the company itself and the employees who were called to testify independently.

Amazon, for its part, claimed that there is no point in Bezos and Jassi appearing for the investigation, because they are not familiar with the details of the activity. She also claimed that the requirement to provide the Commission with information about other subscription plans is excessively broad, and that there is no reason for the law firm not to represent both the company and its employees.
