Amazon MGM Studios Sets November 20 Release for Melania Docuseries

Amazon MGM Studios has scheduled the November 20 release of MELANIA, The Series, a two-part documentary following First Lady Melania Trump, just as the project faces renewed political scrutiny following nationwide Democratic victories in the midterm elections according to Yahoo News Canada. The upcoming streaming release arrives in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide as reported by PPC Land, serving as a follow-up to the feature-length documentary film Melania that debuted earlier in the year noted by Yahoo.

The new streaming project consists of episodes titled Family & Trust and Pride & Honor, focusing on the first lady setting her priorities and mission in motion surrounding the return to the White House according to Yahoo News Canada. Executive produced by Melania Trump and Marc Beckman, the two-part series was directed by Brett Ratner, who also directed the earlier documentary film reported by PPC Land. In the official trailer released on Friday, November 6, the first lady is featured stating, I’m a mother, a wife, also first lady, and emphasizing that her son Barron remains her priority according to Yahoo.

Amazon Spent Seventy Five Million on the Documentary

The transition to a streaming series follows the theatrical and digital run of the original Melania documentary, which opened in cinemas on January 30 before reaching Prime Video on March 9 noted by PPC Land. Amazon spent a total of $75 million on that film—comprising a $40 million acquisition cost and roughly $35 million committed to marketing—while the release generated $16.6 million at the box office reported by Yahoo News Canada and Variety.

During the film’s initial rollout, Democratic lawmakers such as Representative Hank Johnson of Georgia and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts questioned whether the acquisition constituted a pay-to-play scheme given Amazon’s business interests with the administration according to Yahoo News Canada. Amazon Executive Chair Jeff Bezos denied any connection between the company’s business decisions and political influence, stating at the time, Amazon’s a big company and makes a lot of decisions. But no, this idea that somehow that is a way of buying influence, it’s just not. It’s just not correct, as quoted by Yahoo News Canada.

Congressional Majorities Target Tech Companies with Subpoenas

The November 20 premiere of the docuseries arrives in a shifting political environment following midterm election results that altered the balance of power in Washington reported by The Daily Beast and Variety. Incoming Democratic congressional majorities have signaled plans to launch investigations and issue subpoenas targeting technology companies, including Amazon, over corporate donations and political relationships according to The Daily Beast and Variety.

The White House has consistently maintained that neither the president nor his family members have engaged in or will engage in conflicts of interest noted by The Daily Beast. Meanwhile, the White House and the Office of the First Lady did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the congressional scrutiny surrounding the streaming projects according to the same reporting.
